Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle has warned George Russell that it it could already be “game over” for his 2027 Formula 1 title challenge he does find another gear.
Russell has been emphatically defeated in 2026 by Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian in just his second season in F1.
The battle for supremacy at Mercedes has proven to be tight during qualifying, only for Antonelli to romp away during races, leaving Russell on just three wins compared to Antonelli’s nine.
Nowhere was the gap between the two teammates on display more than in Monza, where Antonelli, starting last, scythed through the field to win despite Russell starting on the front row.
Brief glimpses of Russell’s prowess were also on display during the season, notably Baku, where he took pole position by over seven tenths of a second, before dominating the race.
But these performances were few and far between, with consistency proving to be the Briton’s downfall in an unsuccessful title campaign.
Brundle alluded to the problem of Russell struggling to match Antonelli, stating he “he has not been as fast”.
“What will hit George hardest is that he couldn’t match Antonelli for speed, for consistent speed, and that’s all that matters in this business,” he said to Sky Sports News.
“The stopwatch is a very antiquated system; despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year running two Formula 1 cars, we live and die by the stopwatch.
“And George has not been as fast as Kimi, especially in the second half of stints on a set of tyres. So that’s what we’ll get to George.”

Could title loss be the making of George Russell?
Given the scale of the defeat to Antonelli, there is a chance this could send Russell into a performance nosedive.
Brundle however does not believe this to be the case, but warned Russell if he does not find more performance “it’s game over” for 2027.
“It might break George. I actually think it will make him. He’ll find an overdrive. He’s got to,” the F1 driver-turned commentator added. “He’s got to come back next year and just lift his game up if he’s going to beat Kimi Antonelli.
“But I think meanwhile he’s just had to suffer an awful season for himself, a brilliant season for a 19-year-old who then turned 20 through that season…
“George has either got an overdrive, or it’s game over. There’s an over in there somewhere.”
Russell’s title loss mirrors Nico Rosberg’s 2015 defeat to Lewis Hamilton, one where the German had to dig deep to take the title away from him a year later. Whether Russell can pull off a similar feat remains to be seen.
