Fernando Alonso has revealed he’s “frustrated beyond imagination” after yet another poor Aston Martin performance at the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix.
Aston Martin headed to Mexico, looking poised to have a good result at the high-altitude circuit. However, their plans quickly unravelled from the first session of the weekend.
As reserve driver Jak Crawford replaced Alonso in FP1, the AMR-26 broke down on the circuit, plaguing the Silverstone-based outfit early in the weekend and acting as an omen of what was to come.
Issues continued into Saturday’s crucial qualifying session, as Alonso retired from Q1 with a power unit failure. This was a bitter pill to swallow after finishing seven tenths off the fastest time in FP2, so Aston may have been on track for a Q3 appearance.
Fernando Alonso frustrated with outcome of qualifying in Mexico
“We were P12, P13, P11, so we were in the window, you know,” Alonso told media after qualifying, including Motorsport Week.
“If we did a good lap, maybe it was possible, but I think that was probably too optimistic. P13, P12 was our position today.”
The disappointing result marks the latest woe for Alonso and Aston Martin, who have had a season to forget in 2026.
When asked whether he could deliver a recovery drive on Sunday, Alonso remained pragmatic, frustratedly explaining that this weekend sums up his “story of the season.”
“So, when you start at the back, there’s no way you can follow cars closer or something like that,” Alonso explained
“Big opportunities, so, yeah, frustration is beyond imagination, but this is the story of the year.”
Following his disappointing session, Alonso reportedly joked about skipping Sunday’s race.
“I’m heading straight to Brazil,” Alonso reportedly said after qualifying, according to Spanish-language coverage of his comments.
Aston Martin has not commented on the Spaniard’s remarks.
