Lewis Hamilton has become the latest driver to throw his backing behind Esteban Ocon after Haas confirmed that he will leave the team at the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
After being on the cards for a number of months following a difficult season, Haas confirmed ahead of Sepang that Ocon will leave the team, replaced by Rafael Camara.
Given the lateness of the season, and the lack of seats available, it is likely that Ocon will face a year on the sidelines for the second time in his career.
This led to Ocon revealing that the only driver to reach out and show sympathy with his situation was Lance Stroll.
A new name has now been added to the Frenchman’s defenders: Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion revealed he spoke to Ocon in person but did not reveal detail of the conversation.
“I’m not going to say what I said because it’s private and I didn’t text him,” he confirmed to media, including Motorsport Week.
“I didn’t know about the text situation, but I thought it would be better to see him in person. I think he’s one of the nicest guys here.

Hamilton then spoke of his sadness at seeing Ocon leave, but believes opportunity awaits the Frenchman in 2027.
“He’s always been so charming young lad,” he said.
“I don’t know how his environment is or what his challenges have been. I guess it’s probably not been easy over the years, but I think he remains positive.
“It’s just sad to see him leave because I think he’s in a very talented environment. I think he deserves to be here.
“But when one door closes, it opens up new opportunities for something even better.I know whatever else he’s got to do, he’s going to do it. He’s a great character.”
Hamilton’s endorsement of Ocon will give the Frenchman a morale booster ahead of this weekend, but his final destination post-2026 remains a mystery.
