Lewis Hamilton has visited the FIA medical team after taking ill following an excruciating Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.
Despite starting from the second row of the grid, Hamilton could only muster a sixth-place finish at the chequered flag after the 62-lap race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The Ferrari driver had opted to start the race on the yellow-walled Medium tyres, a decision that pretty much unravelled his evening on the streets of Singapore at lights out.
Hamilton suffered massive tyre degradation, a similar plight to his fellow Medium runners, and was forced into an alternate two-stop strategy.
But even as Ferrari tried to extend his stint into a one-stopper, the tyre delta to the likes of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri was just too much for him to resist.
After the race, the Briton came onto the team radio comms to apologise, signalling that it was he who had decided on the strategy.
“Sorry, boys. I let you down today with that strategy,” he said.
“My call, and I lost us valuable points. I’ll try and make up for it in the next one.”
Lewis Hamilton suffers health scare after F1 Singapore GP
The Marina Bay Street Circuit is known to be the most physically demanding circuit on the calendar for the drivers.
And after a tough evening where nothing quite went Hamilton’s way, Ferrari revealed that the seven-time World Champion had also taken ill after jumping out of his SF-26.
Hamilton’s condition was severe enough for a visit to the FIA medical centre, and skipping the post-race media session.
“After the race, Lewis felt unwell and has been seen by the FIA medical team,” a Ferrari spokesperson said.
“He has been given permission by the FIA to not attend the post-race Media pen.”
At the time of publishing, no further updates were made available about Hamilton’s health. But we do wish him a speedy recovery.
Up next for the Scuderia and Hamilton is the Circuit of the Americas, for the US GP in two weeks’ time.
