Sebastian Vettel has hinted at a potential return to Formula 1, despite not currently seeking opportunities in the sport.
The four-time World Champion remains a fan favourite years after his emotional departure from F1, with Vettel continuing to follow the sport closely from the outside. However, the former Aston Martin driver explained that he’s enjoying his new role as a family man.
“Obviously, I enjoy the time that I have. I think it’s a privilege to be in that position with family, but I also run a little farm at home, so I’m looking after that,” Vettel discussed on BBC‘s Chequered Flag podcast.
The German driver stepped away from full-time racing at the end of the 2022 season, but has remained involved in several projects focused on sustainability and the future of motorsport.
“I’m still very much involved in the sport. Obviously, I don’t have an active role at the moment, but very much following what’s going on and caring about the sport’s future. Especially [F1’s net-zero goal in] 2030 or the new regulations, what might change?
“I’m always open for what comes around the corner in terms of maybe a role in the future, but I’m not actively pursuing it.”
The 39-year-old highlighted that whilst he isn’t actively pursuing an F1 job, he still shares a deep love for the sport. Most recently tuning into the latest Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the streets of Baku.
“I’m not speaking to teams or individuals and dropping my CV here and there, but following from the outside with great joy and pleasure.”
Vettel remains open to an F1 return
Whilst he continues to enjoy life outside of the sport that occupied his life for 16 years, Vettel’s comments leave the door open to a potential return outside of racing. In an area that the German holds near to his heart: sustainability.
The former Ferrari driver has remained particularly focused on sustainability, an area that became increasingly important to him during the latter stages of his F1 career.
“But obviously, the topics that have been in my head the final years of my active career are still very much there and present,” Vettel added.
“So topics around sustainability, around the future, not just for myself, for my children, but for all of us and the future of the sport.
Since his departure from the sport, Vettel has continued to champion sustainability initiatives both within motorsport and beyond it. His work in the area has remained a key focus, with the German now looking towards how he can build on those projects in the future.
“That’s where it closes the loop and the projects that I’ve done, some of them visible at the track, others less visible, I’m very much thinking about the ideas that I have for what might come next.”
