The future of Fernando Alonso in Formula 1 and with Aston Martin has been the subject of longstanding speculation. But that speculation is now over.
The Silverstone-based squad has confirmed that Alonso will re-sign for the 2027 season, offering a major boost amid the gradual recovery from its difficult 2026 campaign.
Alonso has faced media scrutiny over the summer as to whether he would remain with Aston next year, with early rumours suggesting a potential return to Alpine.
But with recent reports have aligned towards either continutity with the British marque, whether it be with the F1 team, or in a capacity out of the cockpit.
The Spaniard, who recently became the 14th-oldest points-scorer in F1 history, confirmed this in Madrid, telling media, including Motorsport Week: “As I said many times, I will keep driving, if it’s in Formula 1 or other categories, I don’t really know, and while I’m in Formula 1, I will be with this team, driving or not driving, because I love the sport.”
It is now official that it will be the former, in a teasing announcement video on Aston’s social media platforms.
In the video, Alonso sits in a chair in a dark room, and reflects on his career, concluding: “I will retire from Formula 1,” with a long pause, followed by, with a wry smile: “But not yet.”

In a statement, Alonso said: “I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin Aramco. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.
“I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”
Aston locks in 2027 line-up with Stroll confirmation
The announcement also confirms that Lance Stroll will once again race alongside Alonso in 2027, citing “determination” in reversing the wrongs of this year as a key factor.
“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term,” the Canadian said. “I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.
“There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me. I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals.”
Aston’s Executive Chairman and Stroll’s father, Lawrence, said: Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team. Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation.
