Williams has confirmed that Luke Browning will be handed a fresh opportunity in Formula 1 machinery at next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The young Brit, who acts as the Grove-based squad’s reserve driver, will deputise for Alex Albon in the FW48 at the ‘temple of speed’, his second outing in such a capacity this season.
Browning was due to appear on Friday in both Barcelona and Austria, but an electrical fault prevented any running in the former.
It is another chance for the team’s academy star to dovetail his responsibilities with his ongoing charge in the Japanese Super Formula Championship for Kondo Racing.
In a statement, Browning said: “I’m thrilled to have another chance to drive an FP1 session with Atlassian Williams F1 Team. It’s a great opportunity to get invaluable laps in the FW48 while building my understanding of the car and helping to bring useful data and feedback back to Grove. Each session teaches you something new, and I want to take every bit of learning I can from this to keep pushing my development and the team forward. For this weekend, it’s about supporting Williams to help maximise the result here in Monza.”
Williams will be hopeful of utilising the grunt from its Mercedes power unit to challenge for points, after a difficult weekend in Zandvoort seeing them fall well short of competing.
The team’s disappointing season has been given a boost with the announcement last week that Albon and teammate Carlos Sainz have both signed extensions to remain with the team into next season and beyond.
