Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has speculated that Max Verstappen is facing a difficult decision about his future in the sport.
The Red Bull driver has suffered a challenging start to the 2026 season, and has suggested multiple times to the media that he could leave the sport due to his dissatisfaction with the new regulations.
Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull is not due to end until 2028. However, it is believed that the four-time World Champion could leave the team early due to the existence of performance clauses within their agreement.
Is Sainz waiting for Verstappen to leave Red Bull?
Schumacher suggested that the rumours surrounding Carlos Sainz and Williams could indicate that he’s waiting for an opportunity at Red Bull, with Verstappen potentially poised to leave.
“I’m curious about Sainz,” the former F1 driver told Sky Deutschland. “He seems to have turned down an offer from Williams.
“Does that have anything to do with the fact that Max Verstappen might be leaving Red Bull? Oscar Piastri has lost some of his status. Or is Sainz perhaps heading to Audi?”
He continued: “Things are in turmoil at Williams. The team made a huge mistake with the car.
“James Vowles also apparently didn’t organise things well enough, now that he and his team were able to build a car from scratch for the first time under the new regulations.
“There’s likely a lot of friction there as well.”
Schumacher: “Something has broken” in Verstappen-Red Bull relationship
There have also been rumblings that Verstappen could be preparing for a switch to McLaren, following in the footsteps of his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who is due to move there in 2028.
A number of options for Verstappen have been circulating, but it appears most likely he’ll stay at Red Bull. Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner argued the four-time champion would be unlikely to look at any team that’s not better than Red Bull – of which, he said, there are few.
However, Schumacher believes there has been a shift in the relationship between Verstappen and the Austrian outfit due to the enduring conversations surrounding his future.
“Something has broken between Verstappen and Red Bull,” Schumacher said.
“The ongoing discussion about his future eventually becomes exhausting for the team as well.
“The team hasn’t delivered either. The car was particularly bad at the start of the season, although the update did help somewhat. But the car is very difficult to drive.”
Schumacher went on to say that Verstappen’s dilemma lies in between feeling comfortable at a team he’s driven for since 2016, and eyeing up spots at other teams where he believes he could win races.
“On the one hand, Max feels comfortable at Red Bull. On the other hand, however, there’s McLaren, where Lando Norris can win with his car.
“Max undoubtedly assumes that he’d be even better there himself. The question is whether Max has lost confidence that Red Bull can still turn things around, or whether this restructuring is simply taking too long for him.”
