After the Cadillac Formula 1 Team made a shock announcement that Graeme Lowdon would depart the team for the rest of the 2026 season, CEO Dan Towriss has revealed the reasons behind the sudden exit.
The American outfit’s debut season in F1 was not without its difficulties. The team was expected to be backmarkers in its first season and with their focus on understanding the car and getting familiar with F1, they have not yet had an opportunity to secure points. Despite this, the team has made steady progress.
Still, Lowdon was expected to stay with the team through its growth period. After the news of Lowdon stepping aside, Marcin Budkowski was appointed as the new Team Principal.
A ‘very narrow window of opportunity’
In a virtual press conference attended by Motorsport Week, Dan Towriss spoke about the Cadillac changes.
When asked when and why the plan was to remove Lowdon at this stage, and whether any concerns led to the decision, Towriss explained: “I think Graham and I always talked about that there would be a transition at some point.
“This decision was mine. And so I think there’s a very narrow window of opportunity.
“When you look at what we’re building, and an opportunity to build something new and innovative, and what I didn’t want to do was build something that’s already been done, something that’s old and then try to improve it. And so I think, that the time for that change came sooner than was expected.
“But really, it’s I wouldn’t say that it’s, you know, the performance or the cheating issues over the last few weeks. But it’s really about just having a clear vision of what we’re building in the future, the rate of progress and making sure that matches the ambitions of ownership.”
The F1 team clearly has a vision for its future. With new leadership, they hope to continue their progress this season on a stronger trajectory.
