Mercedes delivers bleak prediction for ‘inevitable’ F1 penalties

Mercedes discusses likely F1 penalties for drivers

Mercedes admits that grid penalties are almost guaranteed for both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell heading into the final half of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The introduction of new regulations has seen an increase in reliability issues across the grid. For Mercedes, these issues pose a major problem for their championship-contending pair of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Whilst Mercedes has made significant progress in its power unit concerns, the damage to existing components is irreversible.

Championship leader Antonelli currently holds a 50-point deficit to his predecessor, Lewis Hamilton. However, the Italian has exhausted the maximum allocation for several components, setting him up for what could be a costly grid drop when F1 returns.

But whilst Russell currently finds himself in a slightly better position, he is likely to need additional components as the season progresses.

Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord acknowledged that the situation is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid.

“Looking at how many we’ve used in the first half of the season, I think it’s almost inevitable that, at some point, there will be penalties to take,” Lord explained.

“That’s something that the strategy team and the guys in Brixworth will work to figure out what the optimum route is through the rest of the season.”

“We’ve got half a season to do. Kimi’s on his fourth set of bits, so the next ones incur penalties, and George is on his third in the first half of the year.”

“The probabilities and the maths would suggest that both, at some point, will need to take a form of penalty; size to be determined!”

Strategic penalty decisions at Mercedes

Importantly for Mercedes, they are acutely aware of the penalty situation. Rather than dwelling on the penalties themselves, the team are working together to strategically find the best weekend to serve the inevitable grid drop. Toto Wolff cited the Italian Grand Prix as a potential venue for Antonelli to take a penalty.

“We need to decide when that is,” Wolff explained

“When we need to take one, and which tracks – there could be one that can be very special for Kimi, but on paper looks like it’s a good place to take an engine penalty.”

The suggestion understandably impacts Antonelli’s home race this season. Wolff, however, joked about sending the Mercedes driver to the back of the grid to manage pressure.

“So we need to speak to Marco [Antonelli, Kimi’s father] whether we want to take an engine penalty in Monza!”

“We’ll take the pressure off in Monza by starting him from the back!” he said.

“Our reliability has just not been good. Whether we take a penalty or not, we shall see.”

Mercedes believes F1 reliability concerns are over

Mercedes’ reliability struggles have continued throughout 2026, with both Russell and Antonelli suffering costly problems. The Briton has faced battery, harvesting, gearbox and water-leak issues, all playing a significant role in his title charge. Whilst his Championship leading team-mate experienced a costly battery failure whilst chasing down a strong Spanish Grand Prix.

Russell has faced several reliability concerns across the season

Lord admits the season has been far from ideal despite the team’s strong form since the season opener in Albert Park.

“On the chassis side, it’s been different things: the wheel shield in Silverstone, other elements elsewhere,” Lord highlighted

“So yeah, there’s been a number of different elements for us to get on top of.”

Crucially, the team believe their reliability concerns are behind them. Successful upgrades are already in place to combat the issues that have plagued their season thus far.

“Initially, we had some challenges with the ERS and the whole sort of the SME, the pack, that were closely related issues that were responsible for the failures in Canada and in Barcelona that we believe are, for the most part, resolved with the reliability update we brought to Austria,” Lord explained.

“But the most frequent one was the concern with the ERS pack, and we hope… a lot of hard work went into the many, many fixes that were contained in that latest spec that we brought in Austria.”

Mercedes currently sits at the top of the Constructors’ standings, 72 points ahead of Ferrari in second. But with impending grid drop penalties, they may be inviting their rivals to catch up to them. Setting the stage for an enthralling race to the end in 2026.
