McLaren has admitted to breaking curfew at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix on Friday night after a critical issue was found with Lando Norris’ McLaren MCL40.
Norris and McLaren have endured a challenging start to the F1 Monaco GP, the MCL40 once again demonstrating its questionable reliability.
Although he finished sixth in FP1, he ground to a halt in FP2 with a suspected electrical fault, losing valuable track time.
Further misery awaited when he and McLaren were summoned to the stewards office at 19:00 after it was discovered their CDS system was obstructed by transparent tape.
Although the team escaped with a financial penalty, the team then broke curfew after an analsying the damage to the MCL40 from the stoppage.
Extensive changes to Lando Norris’ car confirmed
In a statement, McLaren outlined the changes made to the car, including the “Energy Store Main Enclosure” (ESME).
“Following Lando’s car stopping on track in FP2 yesterday, the team carried out extensive work ahead of FP3 this morning,” McLaren said in a statement.
“To investigate and address the issue comprehensively, the team elected to break curfew last night and replace the wiring harness, and also changed the ESME pack within the permitted allocation.
This was the team’s first curfew break of the season, therefore, no penalty is applied. However, it is the loss of track time that is likely to prove the most costly on the famous streets of Monaco.
