Red Bull took to its social media after the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix to fire a humorous jibe at George Russell after his retirement from the race.

Russell was battling Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the win at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve when a suspected battery issue truncated his involvement.

Antonelli went on to complete a fourth straight win, to extend his lead in the Drivers’ title, opening-up a 45-point gap to Russell.

Angry that a potential victory had slipped from his grasp, Russell, upon exiting his W17, chucked his headrest forwards, landing in front of the stricken car on the asphalt.

The outburst saw Russell pick up a €5,000 fine, and expressed his “embarrassment” at the action, as per the FIA’s official decision document.

And those who run Red Bull’s social media accounts took the opportunity to poke fun at Russell, who has frequently crossed some contentious paths with its driver Max Verstappen in the past.

“Borderline something something,” the post read, presumably in reference to Russell’s 2024 response to Verstappen’s accusation that the Brit manoeuvred stewards into penalising him for impeding Russell in qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix.

Upon learning Verstappen’s response, Russell said: “As soon as something doesn’t go his way, he lashes out with unnecessary anger and borderline violence.”

With next week’s Monaco Grand Prix potentially being a great leveller, will Russell find Verstappen’s in his path for the first time in 2026?
