Dan Ticktum offers Antonio Felix da Costa olive branch after contentious Monaco clash

Dan Ticktum has offered Antonio Felix da Costa an olive branch after their contentious clash in Race 1 of the Formula E Monaco E-Prix, for which the Brit received a 33-second penalty.

Ticktum was in third place and under pressure from da Costa when the pair came together at the Nouvelle Chicane, destroying the Portuguese’s Jaguar, and ending his race.

It earned the Kiro driver a time penalty that saw him drop down the order, handing the final podium place to his teammate, Pepe Marti, the first of his Formula E career.

After the race, a dejected and furious da Costa told Motorsport Week: “What happened happened and he got a penalty, so I have nothing to say. That was completely wrong from him and the stewards saw it and penalised him.

“But I’m just angry that we let it escalate to that point. He should have gotten a warning three laps prior because he was moving under brakes. He was just driving completely illegally down.

“If we follow our guidelines and he was moving under brakes, and then if you don’t tell a guy that’s driving dangerously, you don’t give him a warning or you don’t tell him that, then he’s going to keep doing it and then what happened happens.”

After Race 2, in which Ticktum received another time penalty, seeing his double-pole position weekend fail to reap any significant reward, gave Motorsport Week his version of events.

“Look, I do see where they’re [the stewards] coming from, but only to a tiny extent, and the people in De Costa’s corner,” he said.

“The track goes slightly to the right, but I think the key thing for me is I wasn’t moving under braking. You know, moving under braking means you change direction while you’re braking.

“And from the moment I hit the brake, my steering stayed dead straight. Yes, I was wandering over, but he also had more than enough room to go down the inside.

“He just threw it up the inside, braked so late, lost control of the rear and then hit me. So, yeah. I don’t think that one was my fault. I really don’t.”

Dan Ticktum looks for a resolution: ‘Hopefully we’ll put it behind us’

Da Costa’s Race 2 started horrifically, being punted off at the same chicane by Edoardo Mortara, whilst in second place. Dropping down the order, he mounted a miraculous comeback, moving up to fourth and finishing third after the Swiss driver was also penalised for his misdemeanour.

It leaves da Costa still in the championship fight, but still on the periphery, with teammate Mitch Evans now top of the standings after a solid weekend from the Kiwi.

Ticktum continued that he had tried to offer diplomacy to da Costa, with feelings still running high.

“He messaged me something quite immature, really [after Race 1],” Ticktum claimed. “He just said I was driving like a maniac and I wrote him a nice message.

“I’ve always had a lot of respect for the guy. And like I say, I haven’t had a chance to congratulate him for today, but obviously a good job from him.

“I hope there’s no animosity between us. Like I say, I’ve always had big respect for him and looked up to him throughout my career. So, yeah, hopefully we’ll put it behind us.”

The field will have plenty of time to cool down as the all-electric champion will return in a month’s time in Sanya, the city playing host to an E-Prix for the first time in seven years.
