Ferrari legend crashes classic F1 car in Monaco Historic GP
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

This week sees the return of the Historic Monaco Grand Prix, and there was a horrifying moment for one ex-Ferrari driver, who crashed a classic and precious Formula 1 car.

The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is one of the principality’s marquee racing events, taking place prior to or during its hectic Springtime schedule, headed by the Formula E E-Prix and F1 Grand Prix.

It gives fans a chance to see some beautiful and momentous restored machinery to take to the famous street track, with a smattering of legendary ex-drivers putting some of them through their paces.

But on Friday, it went awry for Scuderia legend, Jean Alesi.

The French-Sicilian, who raced for the Maranello-based squad between 1991 and 1995, was behind the wheel of the 312.

Its challenger for four seasons, the model Alesi was driving was from its final season in 1969, in which the team scored no better than third place, achieved at the Dutch Grand Prix by Kiwi Chris Amon.

The car’s owner will need to stump up a few Euros for a repair bill, however, as Alesi spun on the approach to the Nouvelle Chicane, hitting the barrier just before the apex.

Alesi spun around before the car came to a stop off the racing line.

It is not the first time that a high-profile driver crashed a classic Ferrari during the event, as Charles Leclerc went backwards into the barrier at the Rascasse in a 1974 car raced by Niki Lauda, damaging the rear wing.
