Johann Zarco made the most out of the rain-affected Brazilian MotoGP Practice session as he finished Friday’s running as the fastest rider.
Despite the damp patches from the morning rain continuing to plague the track, all riders headed out onto the circuit with slick tyres.
The field quickly filtered onto the track as more rain threatened, with Jorge Martin leading the pack around as the riders looked to get early laps under their belts.
The pressure to set a competitive lap led to early chaos at Turn 4 – with Brad Binder, Jack Miller and Diogo Moreira all crashing at the corner in the opening 10 minutes of the session.
However, after the first initial runs were completed, the rain continued to fall and despite some efforts, there was no chance of any improvement.
Johann Zarco set the best early lap time and, by virtue of the rainy conditions, topped the session for LCR Honda with a 1:21.257.
Marc Marquez finished second, 0.125s behind Zarco, while Toprak Razgatlioglu completed the top three.
Jorge Martin continued as the strongest Aprilia rider in fourth, while FP1 leader Pedro Acosta rounded out the top five.
Gresini’s Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer finished sixth and eighth respectively with Fabio Quartararo sandwiched between the pair.
Francesco Bagnaia completed his session in ninth as Ai Ogura completed the top 10 to seal the final automatic Q2 spot.
Luca Marini narrowly missed out in 11th, while Jack Miller recovered from an early crash to take 12th.
Alex Rins took the flag in 13th ahead of Maverick Vinales in 14th, with home favourite Diogo Moreira trailing behind the pair.
Joan Mir finished Friday’s running in 17th, while Brad Binder bested fellow crasher Franco Morbidelli to 18th.
Fabio Di Giannantonio finished just behind VR46 team-mate Morbidelli in 19th.
Marco Bezzecchi struggled to put a clean lap together and only managed 20th, ahead of the struggling satellite machine of Raul Fernandez.
Enea Bastianini failed to set a representative lap time and finished 22nd.
