Marc Marquez began a vital Aragon MotoGP weekend strongly by setting the pace in the opening practice session.
As Marquez and Ducati looked to respond to the challenge laid down by Aprilia in Silverstone, the Spaniard posted an impressive 1:47.532s.
Pedro Acosta crashed in the final five minutes of the session but rounded out the top five ahead of Jack Miller in sixth.
Franco Morbidelli edged in front of Fabio Di Giannantonio as the VR46 pair took seventh and eighth respectively despite Di Giannantonio suffering the first crash of the weekend.
Fermin Aldeguer was ninth at the flag, while Fabio Quartararo finished inside the top 10.
Johann Zarco took 11th on his return to MotoGP action after three months out, with Alex Rins 12th and Diogo Moreira in 13th.
Joan Mir completed the session 14th ahead of Pol Espargaro, who continued to deputise for Maverick Vinales in 15th.
Toprak Razgatlioglu was 16th in his first official MotoGP session at the Aragon circuit, while Luca Marini finished 17th.
Championship leader Jorge Martin had an underwhelming opening session in 18th, with Brad Binder 19th and Francesco Bagnaia also disappointing in 20th.
Enea Bastianini took the chequered flag in 21st, while Lorenzo Savadori replaced the injured Ai Ogura and completed the standings in 22nd.
