Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari 1-2 in the first free practice session of the new Formula 1 season ahead of this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

The Monegasque’s 1:20.267s, set in the final minutes of the session, saw him top the tiem sheets, nearly half a second ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar completed a Red Bull 3-4, with rookie Arvid Lindblad overcoming an early power loss to finish fifth, ahead of home hero Oscar Piastri.

Reigning World Champion Lando Norris’ session ended early due to a gearbox issue, with Aston Martin’s ongoing PU woes seeing Fernando Alonso fail to take to the track, with Lance Stroll restricted to limited running.
