Fernando Alonso has demanded that Aston Martin effectively writes off the remaining four races of the Formula 1 season to “rest” before the new rules arrive in 2026.
Aston Martin has endured a miserable year, with the AMR25 struggling for pace at a variety of circuits across the calendar as it battles to salvage a strong end to 2025.
Locked in a fierce battle for sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team looks set to drop down the order, as rivals Haas and Racing Bulls have out-developed the Silverstone squad.
This has drawn a demand from Alonso that the team now focus on the massive technical regulation overhaul for 2026, as he targets a return to the front of the grid.
The Spaniard is prioritising operational improvements for Aston Martin, following its disastrous showing in Mexico, with Alonso retiring and Lance Stroll spinning to a point-less finish.
“On the weekends we still need to perform at our best level,” he said to Autosport.
“We need to keep the motivation high. We need to improve in some things that we need operational-wise to get better for next year. So we need to use these races as a test in a way.”
Focusing on a 2026 revival
Given the team’s decline in the second half of the season, Alonso is calling for a period of rest at Aston Martin, demanding efforts for 2025 are offset to give the team a chance next season.
“Obviously, we need to have an eye into next year’s calendar and save a little bit of energy,” he added.
“Even if we are racing hard and we’re traveling for these next two months, we need to also think about having some rest as well early, now in the last part of the year, to start in January with the batteries fully charged.”
