Max Verstappen topped the timesheets in second practice for the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix, with both McLarens down in fourth and 12th.

The Red Bull man, who sat out FP1 in favour of its junior driver Arvid Lindblad, clocked a 1:17.392, just over a tenth ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in second.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli went third for Mercedes, with Lando Norris the highest of the two McLaren cars, five hundredths ahead of the second Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton.

George Russell was sixth, with Verstappen’s team-mate Yuki Tsunoda seventh, around half a second behind.

Fernando Alonso gave Aston Martin cause for confidence with eighth, a thousandth ahead of compatriot Carlos Sainz in the Williams.

Alonso’s team-mate Lance Stroll was 10th, with Liam Lawson just ahead of the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Esteban Ocon was 13th, with Isack Hadjar 14th and Gabriel Bortoleto 15th, one place ahead of Sauber team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.

The second Haas of Oliver Bearman was 18th, ahead of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. His team-mate Pierre Gasly was 20th, sandwiching the Williams of Alex Albon, who survived a scrape with the wall on the exit of the final turn early in the session.

For McLaren, it may put a little extra pressure on to see Verstappen at the top of the order once again, as the Dutchman looks to continue his quest on closing the gap to both Piastri and Norris in the battle for the Drivers’ title.
