Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies has described watching Max Verstappen racing as like “watching history in the making” amid his renewed Formula 1 title bid.
Verstappen took his third win in five races at the United States Grand Prix, maintaining a 100 per cent podium record since F1 returned from its summer break.
The win in Austin cemented Verstappen’s rejuvenation in the latter part of the F1 season, with dominant displays at Monza and Baku kickstarting the impressive streak.
Verstappen has been the beneficiary of a revitalised Red Bull package, the team having made considerable ground on its rivals to ensure the RB21 is now a more consistent challenger.
In doing so, Verstappen now sits just 26 points behind Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Championship, and 40 behind Oscar Piastri, bringing himself firmly back into the race.
Speaking after the race at the Circuit of the Americas, Mekies praised Verstappen, when asked if watching his title chances buoyed is, in some way, historic.
“I think watching Max driving is watching history in the making. You are using the right words,” he told media including Motorsport Week.
“It surprises us every time he goes out on track.
“It surprises us on how much he’s pushing us between a session and another, how much sensitivity he has in stuff that sometimes we can see and stuff that we cannot see.
“So I think watching him is watching history in the making, it’s a good fair point.”
Prior to the weekend, Verstappen described his title chances as “50/50,” but after the race, declared that “the chance is there,” adding that it was “exciting” to now be in a position to challenge with just five races to go.
