McLaren has officially confirmed that Irish development driver Alex Dunne will depart their Formula 1 McLaren Driver Development programme, effective immediately.
The 19-year-old joined McLaren’s junior roster in 2024 and quickly showcased his potential, notably with participation with two rookie F1 FP1 apperances this season.
Making his FP1 debut in Austria, where he stunned by placing fourth, and later at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, his maturity and feedback were praised by McLaren boss Andrea Stella, and had many eyes on him throughout the paddock.
Dunne also worked extremely closely with McLaren’s previous Formula E team, driving in rookie tests throughout his time with the team.
Despite those milestones, the relationship between McLaren and Dunne has now come to an end, by mutual agreement.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Alex over the last year and to have been able to contribute to his success and growth as a driver through the McLaren Driver Development programme,” a McLaren statement read.
“We wish Alex all the best for his career going forward.”
Meanwhile, the Irishman took to Instagram to thank McLaren for the opportunities he had been given.
“I’d like to thank every individual at McLaren that has helped me develop and improve as a driver,” Dunne explained.
“To have my first opportunity to drive an F1 car, followed by two FP1 sessions, is something I’ll always hold very close to my heart. I wish them all the best for the future. Thank you, Papaya family.”
Despite the split, Dunne remains focused on the final rounds of the 2025 Formula 2 season. The former McLaren driver currently sits 5th in the championship on 130 points, keeping himself in contention for a top-three finish.
