Lando Norris has said he is indebted to McLaren for the car he has to challenge for the F1 championship

Lando Norris has explained how he owes McLaren “everything” for being afforded the chance to compete for this season’s Formula 1 World Championship.

The Briton has shortened the deficit in the title race to just eight points behind team-mate Oscar Piastri, with the Woking-based squad the runaway leaders in the Constructors’ standings.

Norris has regained his form, ticking off two huge wins at both Monaco and at home, coming through the chaos to win in front of his home fans at Silverstone.

Both Norris and Piastri have been afforded the luxury of the MCL39, the Rob Marshall-designed challenger which has so far been the class of the field.

Speaking at the McLaren Racing Live event at Trafalgar Square the week of his Silverstone triumph, Norris showed his immense gratitude to the team for building the car, which has been by far the most competitive in Norris’ seven-season stint with the team.

“It’s getting better and better, so we owe McLaren everything for this season,” he said.

“We work tirelessly. I’ve been part of the team for it feels like forever now, eight, nine years, and for us to have the car that we have this year is genuinely unbelievable.

“It makes our life a lot easier on track, which is a wonderful thing. Yeah, so we owe [McLaren], as much as we’re the ones driving in the cars, and you see us on TV and in the cars.

“We thank [the team] for everything down to it, all the guys and girls back in McLaren making the car as beautiful and as fast as it is.”

Norris and Piastri will recommence their intra-team battle at Spa-Francorchamps next week, with the Belgian Grand Prix following the Hungarian round, the location of a 1-2 finish for the team last year.
