George Russell was quickest at the Red Bull Ring

George Russell was quickest in FP1 for this weekend’s Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen in second place at the Red Bull Ring.

The Brit went top of the timesheets with a 1:05.542s, just six hundredths ahead of the Dutchman, with Oscar Piastri third, a tenth of a second further back.

McLaren’s second car, occupied by Formula 2 title-leader Alex Dunne, was an impressive fourth, the Irishman just one tenth further back from Piastri,

Pierre Gasly was fifth for Alpine, with Gabriel Bortoleto sixth in his Sauber, followed by the Williams duo of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.

Lewis Hamilton was ninth despite an earlier gearbox issue with the Racing Bulls of Isack Hadjar rounding up the top 10.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, fresh from his first podium finish last time out in Canada, was 11th, with the second Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg 12th.

Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso placed their Aston Martins 13ths and 14th respectively, the Spaniard taking a spin at the final corner on his outlap on a set of Soft tyres.

Liam Lawson was 15th in the second Racing Bulls, with Franco Colapinto 16th and Yuki Tsunoda 17th.

The second Ferrari, taken for the afternoon by another F2 driver in Dino Beganovic, was 18th, the Swede also spending extended time in the garage due to problems.

Both Haas cars of Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman propped up the foot of the order, with less than a second covering 19 of the 20 cars.
