M-Sport founder and rallying icon Malcolm Wilson, OBE, has officially been appointed as FIA Deputy President for Sport.

The 69-year-old was formally appointed to the role following a vote at the FIA General Assembly in Macau on Thursday.

Wilson had been nominated in April by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem to succeed Robert Reid, who stepped down citing concerns that the organisation “no longer reflected the standards I believe the FIA must uphold”.

A leading figure in British motorsport, he secured a decisive majority in the vote marking a landslide victory that confirms his new position within the governing body.

“I am delighted to take on the role as FIA Deputy President for Sport,” said Wilson.

“As the Federation pushes forward with its mission to advance motorsport and develop grassroots initiatives, I look forward to playing a part in helping to shape the future of the sport we love and working with the President to continue growing and strengthening our championships.”

Ben Sulayem added: “The role of Deputy President for Sport is absolutely integral to our organisation, and one that Malcolm Wilson brings a wealth of experience to.

“Having competed for over 40 years at the highest level, both as a driver and technical partner to teams, his expertise will be invaluable to the FIA and our Member Organisations.

“I am delighted to welcome Malcolm to the Federation and look forward to working with him to grow motorsport at every level.”

The General Assembly also delivered further good news for the Emirati, as members voted to approve his controversial proposed statutes, passing the amendments by a margin of 83.35% to 16.65%.

Support was even stronger for the proposed changes to the FIA’s ethics code, which passed with an 88.83% majority.
