Fernando Alonso has opened up on how he remains motivated amid Aston Martin's 2024 struggles

Fernando Alonso has admitted the hope that his feedback will help Aston Martin improve in 2025 has maintained his motivation amid the team’s decline in Formula 1.

Alonso is on course to record his lowest points return since his comeback to the sport in 2021 as he has managed 62 points with three rounds remaining this season.

The Spaniard ended the recent triple-header without adding to his tally as Aston Martin‘s struggles with development continued its regression down the pecking order.

Alonso, who hasn’t won a single F1 race since 2013, being laboured with uncompetitive hardware has been a consistent trend since his last title triumph back in 2006.

But although he has now appeared at over 400 F1 race weekends, Alonso’s desire to ensure he earns the maximum result attainable at each round has never wavered.

Alonso has attributed his unrelenting approach to the credence that even battles further back can provide Aston Martin with learnings that help the side down the line.

Asked whether it was worth putting so much in when his reward could be a single point, Alonso told media including Motorsport Week: “It’s the hope that is always there.

“Obviously, in terms of positions and efforts, you will say that it’s not worth fighting for P12.

“But if that P12 gives any insight to the team of what we are missing, if you are fighting with other cars and you see some weaknesses, some strengths.

“You can feed back to the team and you can improve for next race or next year.

“That’s already worth doing it and it’s that hope that next year is going to be your year, that it keeps you alive and it keeps you motivated.”

Alonso wants to give ‘100 per cent’ to Aston Martin

Alonso expressed that his unwillingness to drop his level regardless of how competitive the car is also derives from wanting to respect the whole team’s commitment.

“As well with the 900 people working at the factory, they are not really counting on P12 or winning races,” he continued.

“They are doing the best they can every single day from 8 to 5 to provide the best car possible.

“So, you know, every lap you do there, you feel privileged to do it and you represent a team and a brand in this case with Aston Martin.

“And you are happy to give your 100 per cent every lap for whatever position it is at the end.”
