Stroll backs ‘exciting’ Aston Martin F1 venture to entice Newey

Lance Stroll has backed Aston Martin’s “exciting” venture in Formula 1 to be enough to entice design legend Adrian Newey to choose it as his next team in the series.

Red Bull announced last month that Newey had communicated his desire to bring an end to an illustrious near two-decade spell that’s comprised 13 championships.

With the parties having settled on a departure date next Spring, a scramble has commenced up and down the pit lane to secure the British engineer’s prized signature.

Ferrari is known to have gone on the offensive to attract him, but Aston Martin is also pushing hard amid Lawrence Stroll’s strive to turn the team into title contenders.

Aston Martin is speculated to have put a lucrative proposal on the table and it has emerged that a private tour at its base was conducted with Newey earlier this week.

Stroll believes that the Silverstone-based squad’s budding ambitions to overcome more established names in the sport would be an attractive proposition to consider.

Asked what Aston can provide Newey over other suitors, Stroll replied: “Well, you know, it’s a super exciting factory. We have a young team, but a very exciting project.

“You know, wind tunnel, everything that you already know. That’s very exciting about our team.”

Despite being the son of the team’s owner, Stroll denied that he has a thorough understanding of how advanced discussions are with Newey over a potential switch.

“Well, I think everyone in this paddock wants to meet Adrian Newey,” he added. “I hear a lot of things, mainly from you guys.

“I mean, last week I heard he was going to Ferrari and now he’s coming to us. Next week he’s going to be going to Williams! So I listen to you guys.

“But I mean, he’s a legend in the sport. He has more championships than anyone in this paddock, drivers, engineers, anyone. Everyone loves Adrian and wants Adrian.”

However, Fernando Alonso, who has expressed his wish to work with Newey on multiple occasions, would not be drawn on the rumours compared to his team-mate.

“There are many questions on that,” Alonso stated. “I read the rumours, I read the news.

“But it’s coming from the same source and the same websites of one week ago [saying] he was in Ferrari and it was the announcement at 12 o’clock before Canada race.

“So yeah, rumours are rumours.”
