AlphaTauri has confirmed that Liam Lawson will continue to fill in for Daniel Ricciardo until the Australian is deemed fit to drive.
Ricciardo returned to Formula 1 in Hungary after replacing the axed Nyck de Vries for the remainder of 2023.
But Ricciardo sustained a fractured metacarpal in his left hand in an accident during second practice at Zandvoort on Friday, only the third planned event of his comeback.
Ricciardo underwent surgery in Barcelona on Sunday and an exact timeframe for his return has not yet been determined.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner previously hinted that Ricciardo may attempt to return in Singapore, which begins with practice on September 15.
Horner confirmed that Ricciardo’s “fairly straightforward” procedure was a success.
On Monday AlphaTauri outlined that Lawson will remain in the AT04 until Ricciardo is given the all-clear.
Lawson has been contesting this year’s Super Formula championship in Japan but the double-header finale at Suzuka – the sole event left in 2023 – does not take place until the weekend of October 28/29, which clashes with the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Lawson finished his debut race at Zandvoort in 13th position after qualifying last.
