Hamilton tops final F1 practice in Hungary ahead of Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton ended the final practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend on top of the timesheets, setting a 1:17.811 in the Mercedes W14 car.

Hamilton, who finished on the podium last time out at Silverstone, was two and a half tenths of a second in front of Max Verstappen.

The World Championship leader complained of a lack of grip during the session, and his best time was almost matched by team-mate Sergio Perez.

Perez’s effort was just 0.006s down on Verstappen’s time as the Mexican looks to put his FP1 crash firmly behind him for the remainder of the weekend.

Nico Hulkenberg set an impressive lap to slot himself into fourth place, while McLaren’s Lando Norris was fifth fastest.

George Russell was unable to replicate the pace of team-mate Hamilton and settled for sixth, three-tenths down on the session-topping pace.

The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were seventh and eighth respectively.

Following a challenging round last time out at the British Grand Prix, the Maranello-based squad is hopeful of a stronger outing this weekend.

Fernando Alonso was ninth for Aston Martin, while Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top 10.

Drivers will be subjected to different regulations during qualifying later in the afternoon, with set compounds in play.

Daniel Ricciardo out-paced Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri, with the duo placing in 18th and 20th respectively.

The Hard compound will be mandatory for Q1, the Medium for Q2, while the red-walled Soft tyre will be used solely for the final Q3 segment.

Qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix will get underway at 16:00 local time.
