With a new track surface giving plenty of grip and speed, Colton Herta rocketed to the top of the timesheets and claimed his first IndyCar pole of the season.

Herta’s time was 1:40.1945, and was only a few tenths of a second off the all-time pole record for the track, which was set all the way back in 2000 by Dario Franchitti.

Pato O’Ward was second fastest, and Alex Palou rounded out the top three after his car had to be rebuilt following a hard shunt in the Saturday morning practice session.

There were multiple off-track incidents during the knockout qualifying session, including Ryan Hunter-Reay who put his ECR Chevy into the barriers in the first weekend with the team.

The Sonsio Grand Prix from Road America takes place Sunday, just after noon Central Time.
