Carlos Sainz, the father of the Ferrari Formula 1 driver that bears the same name, demanded that a medical helicopter return him to the Dakar Rally after a crash that left him in pain.
Competing at the famous Dakar event in which Sainz is a multi-time winner, the Spaniard flipped his Audi RS Q e-tron challenger after mounting a sand dune.
He was subsequently retrieved from the vehicle and placed into a medical helicopter that set out to escort him to the hospital as he complained about chest pain.
However, in mid-air, Sainz ordered that the helicopter be turned around and allow him to return to the wreckage from which he had escaped.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning and he is now back at the Dakar Rally with team-mate Lucas Cruz.
The Dakar Rally has already been filled with drama for Sainz, as he was already involved in a separate accident.
He was also issued a warning after his son, Sainz Jr, closed his car door which was illegal as the Ferrari driver was not part of the Audi programme.
🚨 New episode in the @CSainz_oficial saga on stage 9: the Spaniard asked the medical helicopter on its way to the hospital to turn back and take him to his car. He is now back with Lucas Cruz waiting for their assistance vehicle. 🛠#Dakar2023
