Red Bull’s wind tunnel time reduction has been a huge source of controversy within the Formula 1 community, and for all intents and purposes, this controversy is entirely just. Flat-out reducing a competitor’s wind tunnel time is more than just a small penalty – it is more akin to a handicap.
This begs the question of whether or not Red Bull is not going to be able to perform well in the 2023 season, and as you are going to find out in this article, the answer to this question is pretty mixed. Let’s just dive straight into it.
Red Bull Is undoubtedly going to take a big hit
As you may expect, Red Bull is likely going to take a huge hit now that they have been penalised with a wind tunnel time reduction. Wind tunnels are a vital piece of technology that allows car manufacturers to test and perfect their cars, and having less time to do just that is likely going to hinder Red Bull in one way or another.
Don’t get us wrong; Red Bull could still win the 2023 Formula 1 season. There is no rule saying that the champions are the ones with the most wind tunnel time, and as has been seen in the past, wind tunnel time does not always correlate to field success.
But having less wind tunnel time is likely going to initially make Red Bull’s cars a bit slower, less aerodynamic development, and less efficiency – this is something that has already been reflected by the F1 odds.
Many people are suspecting that Red Bull is going to bring an inferior product in 2023, and unless they manage to fully optimise all of the wind tunnel time they have and also make some great strides during the single pre-season test; Red Bull may just end up entering the competition with a huge disadvantage…

Truth be told; no one quite knows just how much the wind tunnel time reduction is going to affect the performance of the RB19, Red Bull’s 2023 challenger. There is no doubt that Red Bull will have a disadvantage, but whether or not this will be large enough to translate into a disadvantage onto the track is still to be seen.
Red Bull has always been one of the best Formula 1 teams. In all likelihood, a ten percent reduction in wind tunnel time is not going to change this fact. Sure, it may make things a little harder for this energy drink backed team, but if there were any F1 team that could still perform well even when at a disadvantage, it would be the Milton Keynes squad. It’s sure going to be an interesting season.
