Formula 1 practice at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix will be extended in order for teams to sample Pirelli’s prototype 2023 tyres.
Formula 1 sessions were cut to 60 minutes prior to the 2021 campaign but this Friday’s second session will be extended to 90 minutes.
Teams will be able to run Pirelli’s 2023 prototype tyres during the 90-minute session at the figure-of-eight Suzuka track.
The prototype tyres will not feature any coloured markings on the sidewalls.
If a team runs a young driver during the opening practice session then it is permitted to follow its own programme for the opening half hour of second practice before devoting its running to tyre testing.
The same arrangement will be in place for the US Grand Prix later this month.
Current forecasts indicate that Friday is likely to be impacted by rain at Suzuka.
