De Vries: 2023 F1 drive ‘not a given’ scenario
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Nyck de Vries asserts that it is “not a given” he will be racing in Formula 1 in 2023.

The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a full-time move to F1 next year, accelerated by his impressive debut at the Italian Grand Prix last month.

De Vries was a late call up at Williams in Monza, as he stood in for the unwell Alexander Albon.

After displaying a respectable performance in qualifying, de Vries enjoyed a strong race and crossed the line in ninth place, scoring two championship points.

While he has been linked at Williams replacing the outgoing Nicholas Latifi, it is believed that he could be heading to AlphaTauri in 2023, alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

Reports suggest that Pierre Gasly could be heading to Alpine, after several years under the Red Bull F1 umbrella.

However, speaking to Sky F1 after his Monza debut, de Vries asserts that there is no guarantee that he will be on the grid next year.

“It’s not a given,” he said. “My appearance in Monza helped and boosted my reputation in a short time, but it’s not up to me to decide whether I should be in a car or not.

“I hope that time will come to me, and it will materialise in an opportunity. To get an opportunity in Formula 1 everything has to be right, and it’s very much about timing and momentum.

“I’m not the first one who has gone off to do something else and maybe come back to get an opportunity or be on the sideline for a bit.”

De Vries won the Formula 2 Championship in 2019 before switching to Formula E, where he also triumphed in the title fight, becoming the 2020-21 World Champion.

He has acted as a reserve F1 driver for Mercedes during the last handful of years, while also competing for the German manufacturer in FE.

This year, de Vries has had FP1 outings with Williams, Mercedes and Aston Martin alongside his race debut last month.
