Liam Lawson is set to make his Formula 1 weekend debut at the Belgian Grand Prix weekend later this month with AlphaTauri.
Lawson has been part of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2019, and currently races full-time in the Formula 2 championship.
The New Zealand driver finished ninth in the F2 standings last year, and currently sits eighth in the Drivers’ Championship with four rounds remaining in the 2022 campaign.
This year in F1, all teams must allocate two practice sessions to rookie drivers in a bid to give them more on-track experience.
Lawson, who has tested with AlphaTauri in the past, is set to jump behind the wheel of its 2022 car at Spa-Francorchamps.
When asked at the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend about its rookie driver plans, AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost said: “We plan to run Liam Lawson in FP1 in Spa.”
However, it is not yet clear which driver will miss the Spa session, before the other skips a session later in the season.
AlphaTauri currently has Pierre Gasly contracted to the end of the 2023 campaign, while Yuki Tsunoda’s deal expires at the end of the current season.
Lawson is the second Red Bull junior member to run an FP1 session this year, after Juri Vips drove Red Bull’s RB18 car in Spain.
