Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he is in the process of having his mother’s surname, Larbalestier, added to his own.

The Mercedes driver was speaking recently at the Dubai Expo 2020 event in front of an audience.

The 37-year-old enters the year chasing an eighth F1 world title, which would make him the most accomplished title winner in the sport’s history.

Ahead of the upcoming 2022 season, Hamilton says that he is going to add the Larbalestier surname to his own in honour of his mother, Carmen.

“I am really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton,” he said. “None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier, and I’m just about to put that in my name.

“Because I don’t fully understand the idea that when people get married the woman loses their name. And my mum, I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”

Hamilton didn’t give a timeframe on when the change would be complete, but stated it would be “soon”.

“Hopefully soon, I don’t know if it will be this weekend but we are working on it.”

Hamilton is currently contracted to race for Mercedes through 2023 after signing an extension with the team last year.

2022 will be Hamilton’s 10th season with Mercedes, having originally joined the team in 2013.

With the new season getting underway this weekend in Bahrain, Hamilton said: “I’ve come back to fight for the eighth.

“It’s impossible to know what the future holds but doing something no one else has done before would be mind-blowing.”
