The current Formula 1 season has been another classic and shows no signs of letting up as it heads towards its climax in Abu Dhabi in December. 9. Jim Clark
Not such an extrovert as other Formula 1 stars, Clark was a gifted racer who set the 1960s ablaze. This saw him bag two World Championships in 1963 and 1965 for Lotus. Silky smooth behind the wheel, he won 25 out of the 72 races he started.
8. Sir Jackie Stewart
A three-time World Championship winner, this Scottish driver was a real force in Formula 1 from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. It was not all about his sublime driving skills for teams like Tyrell, though. Stewart was also a pioneer for Formula 1 safety and helped make the sport better for all.
7. Ayrton Senna
A truly shocking Formula 1 incident marked the death of Ayrton Senna at the San Marino GP in 1994. He was a man who drove like few others could and it is true to say the sport lost a huge talent that day. Full of passion, flair and charisma, Senna won three championships, in 1988, 1990 and 1991, before his demise.
6. Nikki Lauda
Formula 1 has seen some formidable drivers over the years but few quite as tough as Lauda. He was also a great driver, with cunning and a fierce will to win. This took him to three titles overall in his career – two for Ferrari and one for McLaren.
5. Fernando Alonso
When looking at current Formula 1 aces, Alonso makes the cut for his two World Championship victories and 32 GP wins to date. Brilliant for Renault in the early 2000’s, many think he should have gone on to win more titles by now.
4. Alain Prost
While Senna was a flamboyant, hot-blooded Formula 1 ace, his major rival Prost was the thinking person’s racer. Prost was more like a university professor in style and won four world titles with this approach. He was also a genius at managing his car through a race to finish strongly.
3. Juan Manuel Fangio
Fangio is still revered in Formula One circles for his exploits in the 1950s. This saw him win an impressive five World Championships for four different teams – Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Maserati. In addition to this, he clocked up two second-place championship finishes and drove some of the most legendary Formula 1 cars in history.
2. Michael Schumacher
Until recent years, nobody who followed Formula 1 thought this German icon’s exploits could be matched. An all-time great, Schumacher won seven World Championships and 91 races in his career. Combining high-level reflexes with mental toughness and the ability to drive on the limit, his record for Benetton and Ferrari speaks for itself.

I love Alonso, but he’s not better than Ayrton Senna and with all due respect, in what universe is Lauda better than Senna and Prost is also debatable.
Imagine putting Lewis on #1. He should be in the top 10 but absolutely not even above Stewart. Please look at driver skills and not just at meaningless statistics because Hamilton only won this much because of Mercedes and a total lack of competition, which cannot be said about any of the other drivers on this list. I suppose it’s very telling that the only motivation for Lewis on #1 seems to be the numbers.

Everything is debatable except the numbers so why would you not base the formula (no pun intended) for calculating the greatest driver, on foundation that is not subjective. Everybody and their grandmother has an opinion about what era was most competitive and the reasons why. Sorry but statistics do not care about your feelings, Lewis Hamilton is the Best driver in Formula 1 whether you liked it or not.
Schumacher destroyed every team mate he was ever paired with, also won title in cars that lost constructors, so he did not the best car on the grid. Hamilton lost to plenty of teammates and was also extremely lucky to go from dominant McLaren to dominant Merc. Both great drivers, but in the same team Schumacher would be the no 1.

Jim Clark. When he was killed, Clark had won more F1 races than anyone. In 1963, Clark and Colin Chapman’s Lotus won seven of the ten races, while finishing second at the Indianapolis 500 in an underpowered Lotus-Ford. In 1965, Clark won the 500, won going away, as they would say about a horse race. He won six F1 races, and did not compete at Monaco because he was preparing for Indy.
Juan Fangio said that Clark was the all-time best, so that’s enough for me.
The fact is Sir Lewis (Hamilton) is objectively the # 1 Best Driver in the History of Formula 1. Period. End of.
vettel is better than prost
As an old french man that has been following F1 since 1981, my favorite driver was Alain Prost, and I used to hate Senna when I was young, but as a mature man, I must admit that I couldn’t see any driver even close to Senna’s skills. His ability to feel the changes on the track, his focus. His ability to overcome adversity, Oh my lord, he is untouchable until today IMHO.
Thank you for your objectivity. People like you give the world hope. Prost was a truly great driver. Senna was just transcendent.
Everyone has something to say… but hear this… we shall all dream about the top drivers… how about having 3 races at 3 different tracks . All racers get same car same set up…. The winner has to take all 3 wins
I understand your heart is in the right place in trying to “even the playing field” for a trial. But with the brazen cheating by Masi for vile Verstappen, the bulldozer, last year, I wouldn’t trust there to not be shenanigans even in that. It was like the satanic cheating by the “umpire” against brilliant Serena Williams vs Capriati in 1994 at the U.S. Open. There is always a reckoning for demonic bigotry.
