Fernando Alonso will carry out demonstration runs in a restored Renault R25 at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which will be the last for the Renault name in Formula 1.
The first of two Constructors’ Championships for Renault came in 2005 with the R25, a car that claimed eight wins courtesy of Alonso and team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.
The R25 has been resorted across the last couple of years and will run in Abu Dhabi, after initial plans to demonstrate the car at the French Grand Prix were abandoned due to the pandemic.
Renault will next year compete in Formula 1 under its Alpine brand with two-time World Champion Alonso re-joining to partner incumbent Esteban Ocon.
Alonso will undertake three demonstration runs in the R25 across Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Yas Marina Circuit.
“It’s very emotional to see the R25 run in anger once again, and having Fernando at the wheel is the cherry on the cake,” said Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul.
“The car-driver partnership was a classic time in F1 and remains one of Renault’s proudest achievements in motorsport.
“While the car is a symbol of our past achievements, Fernando reflects our strong ambition to keep pushing for more success and recapture those incredible moments and emotions.
“Of course, any results will now be under the Alpine name but our future success will all be homage to this amazing time in Renault’s F1 history.”
