Mick Schumacher says “everything is open” in this year’s Formula 2 title fight despite heading to the Bahrain finale in the lead of the championship.
The Ferrari-backed youngster, who is expected to step up to Formula 1 with Haas next year, claimed the points lead in Mugello before extending it with victory at the most recent round in Sochi.
Formula 2’s 2020 campaign will conclude across the next two weekends in Bahrain, with 96 points up for grabs across the four races and respective qualifying sessions.
Schumacher heads fellow Ferrari protégé Callum Ilott by 22 points with a group including Yuki Tsunoda, Christian Lundgaard, Robert Shwartzman and Nikita Mazepin all still mathematically in contention.
The lowest-placed of the sextuplet, Mazepin, is 51 points adrift of Schumacher.
“We still have 96 points I think to give away so obviously everything is open, the top six in the championship still can win the championship,” said Schumacher.
“Our goal is to just focus on ourselves, build the best car possible around ourselves, work as well as we did in the last races as a team.
“It is just important to keep my focus, keep improving myself, keep learning and just go for it.”
Schumacher has recovered from a trouble-hit start to 2020 to claim seven podiums from his last nine starts while some rivals have faltered.
“I think we have to be smart for the last two rounds,” said Schumacher on his approach heading to Bahrain.
“Obviously if it is the right moment to attack, we will attack, if it is the right moment to defend, we will defend. It’s about understanding the situation and working from there.”
