Rene Rast has taken his second win of the weekend at Zolder while championship rival Robin Frijns took himself out of the race with a bizarre crash at pit exit.

Rast started the race behind BMW drivers Timo Glock and Sheldon van der Linde, but captured the lead with a strong start at turn one. Glock was then taken out in an incident at the start and found himself in the gravel.

Rast then led from Mike Rockenfeller and Sheldon van der Linde before Robin Frijns moved passed the South African for third place. The Dutchman looked set for another podium until he had a bizarre incident at pit exit, sliding wide and hitting the barriers.

This caused a safety car, which played perfectly into the hands of Rast and Rockenfeller, who pitted right before the safety car came out. The intervention caught out championship leader Nico Müller, who was yet to pit before the safety car and dropped back after making his pitstop.

Rast went on to win by five seconds from Rockenfeller, while Lucas Auer took his second podium of the season and salvaged BMW’s day, while Timo Glock did well to recover from his opening lap incident to finish fourth.

Fabio Scherer, Harrison Newey and Ferdinand Habsburg all took points for Team WRT in fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, with Marco Wittmann in eight. Nico Müller lost further ground to championship rival Rene Rast by finishing ninth place, with Sheldon van der Linde completing the top ten.

Jonathan Aberdein finished eleventh ahead of Robert Kubica, while Loic Duval finished thirteenth after a drivethrough penalty for an unsafe release. The running order was completed by Philipp Eng and Jamie Green.
