Logan Sargeant put his PREMA on pole position for the first FIA Formula 3 race of the British Grand Prix weekend.

The American tussled it out with his team-mates Oscar Piastri and Frederik Vesti, along with the Hitech’s of Liam Lawson and Max Fewtrell.

The end of the first ten minutes saw Piastri on top by two tenths over Lawson, with David Beckmann third, Sargeant fourth and Theo Pourchaire fifth. Vesti, Bent Viscaal, Lirim Zendeli, Richard Verschoor and Alex Peroni made up to the top ten by this point.

Five minutes later, the order changed with Sargeant fastest by only a tenth, pushing Piastri down to second. Vesti made it an all-PREMA top-three. Lawson and Beckmann were next up behind, as the rest of the field prepared for their last runs.

Qualifying concluded with times tumbling down and Sargeant was the ultimate victor, as he improved to keep hold of his pole position and closes down the gap to Piastri in the championship overall with the four extra points.

Liam Lawson was 0.058s off but enough to line-up on the front row. Piastri will start third ahead of Fewtrell, Vesti and Sebastian Fernandez in sixth. The top ten was rounded up by Jake Hughes, Zendeli, Alex Smolyar and Clement Novalak.

The only double-winner of this year’s FIA F3 season Theo Pourchaire could only manage twelfth for ART.

The first race of the weekend commences at 09:25 BST on Saturday morning.
