F1 to raise money for charity by adding names to chequered flags

Formula 1 has announced a novel way of raising funds for charity as part of its #WeRaceAsOne initiative.

F1 will sell squares on the race-ending chequered flags throughout the 2020 season as a way of raising money, with 56 black and white squares for sale and the remaining 24 allotted to the promoter of each race to pass on to their own fans and guests.

The squares will cost around £200 each and fans will receive their square, mounted and framed along with an image of their flag in action, as well as a hologram to confirm its authenticity.

If all 56 squares are sold at each of the opening eight races of the ’20 season, it will raise almost £90,000.

The #WeRaceAsOne initiative was launched this week in support of the #PurposeDriven Movement launched by the FIA, as a platform recognising the two major issues dominating society at this time – COVID-19, and racism and inequality.
