Formula 1 machinery will return to Imola later this month with Scuderia AlphaTauri set to complete a filming day at the venue.
Several Formula 1 teams are arranging tests in order to get race drivers back up to full fitness, and to practice new hygiene measures, ahead of next month’s season-opener in Austria.
Under Formula 1 regulations each team is permitted two filming days per year in which a current-year car may be used, albeit with running limited to 100km, which must take place on Pirelli’s promotional tyres.
Teams have more freedom if they elect to undertake running in cars that are two years or older.
AlphaTauri, rebranded by Red Bull for 2020, has typically held a filming day in February at MotoGP venue Misano.
But Misano is unavailable for AlphaTauri’s desired date as MotoGP squads Ducati, Aprilia and KTM are due to test at the venue ahead of the two-wheeled category’s first race next month.
AlphaTauri will instead carry out a promotional day at Imola, just 15km from its operations base in Faenza, on June 24.
Imola held 27 Formula 1 grands prix between 1980 and 2006 and renewed its FIA Grade 1 license this week, ensuring Formula 1 cars are able to run at the venue.
It is understood to be on a list of venues that could host a grand prix this year should Formula 1 extend its European season beyond Monza.
However, the Ferrari-owned Mugello circuit and former German Grand Prix venue Hockenheim are believed to be the primary options.
Mercedes returned to track action at Silverstone this week while Renault is due to run its two-year old car in Austria next week, with Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon at the wheel.
Racing Point is poised to carry out a filming day with its RP20 on Silverstone’s short circuit next week. Lance Stroll is expected to drive the car.
