The prospect of having Sebastian Vettel at Mercedes in 2021 would make for a good marketing story, according to Team Principal Toto Wolff.
It was announced last week that Vettel and Ferrari will part company at the end of 2020 after failing to agree on a new contract, leaving Vettel a free agent.
Since the news broke over Vettel’s future departure from the Scuderia, the four-time World Champion has been linked with a potential move to the Silver Arrows, potentially alongside Lewis Hamilton.
Should it happen, it would be the first time in Formula 1 history that two multiple World Champions have lined up together in the same team.
Vettel has been linked with other teams as well as the prospect of retiring from F1 at the end of the 2020 season.
“Of course, a German driver in a German car would be a good marketing story. Vettel is obviously someone who is really good, he puts everything into play,” Wolff told Austrian broadcaster ORF.
“He can decide for himself if he wants to leave or join another team, there are still some interesting places to go.”
Despite the links with Vettel, Wolff has insisted the team is focused on the future potential of its younger drivers currently within Mercedes.
“We are looking at what we will do with George Russell and then there is the Vettel variant. But this is not at the top of the agenda at the moment, we want to focus on our team first.”
