HRC have announced that MotoGP test and reserve rider Stefan Bradl will take over from the injured Jorge Lorenzo for his home race at the Sachsenring this weekend.
The German was expected to be called up by the factory Honda squad to deputise for Lorenzo, who fractured his back in an FP2 crash on Friday at Assen, having competed in six races over the the last two seasons, his latest outing coming at Jerez earlier this year, as a wildcard for the team.
Lorenzo is expected to return for the Czech GP at Brno next month, with Bradl making his first MotoGP appearance in Repsol colours in the meantime.
Bradl has competed in 92 MotoGP races with Honda, Aprilia and Forward Yamaha machinery, scoring a best result of second at Laguna Seca for the USA GP back in 2013 with the LCR Honda satellite squad.
He raced with Honda in the World Superbike Championship in 2017, but struggled as he scored a best result of sixth before having to miss the final part of the season through injury, signing a Honda MotoGP testing deal for 2018 rather than making a superbike return.
"I'm very excited to join the Repsol Honda Team in Germany,” said Bradl.
“It's a special race for me as my home race, obviously I am very sorry for Lorenzo and I wish him the fastest recovery possible and to come back strong.
“I am glad to be able to help the team and HRC, let's see what this weekend brings. We have been working well with Honda and I am grateful to them for this opportunity."
