The first race of IndyCar’s double-header weekend from Iowa Speedway took place on Saturday, with Pato O’Ward securing his first victory of the year.

Josef Newgarden looked like he would walk away with the win, but the final pit stop cost the two-time champion and he slotted in behind O’Ward when it mattered most.

Newgarden finished second, coming just ahead of his Team Penske team-mates Will Power and Scott McLaughlin. McLaughlin came all the way through the field from last place to secure a strong result for all three Team Penske entries.

There were a few single car crashes during the event. Jacob Abel and Kyle Kirkwood each crashed at the end of long stints, with each incident appearing to be because their tires suddenly gave up the rest of their grip.

One final crash by Nolan Siegel on lap 247 served to mix up the order just a bit, and denied him an almost guaranteed top 10 finish.

The weekend is not over yet, however, and drivers will get back on track Sunday midday for the second round of the double-header.
