Motorsport Week takes its annual look back through the 2018 archives to see which stories proved most popular with our readers.

But first of all, with the New Year just around the corner and a new season of racing fast approaching, we'd like to thank everyone who's made Motorsport Week their home for motorsport news, features and insights, and we look forward to growing in 2019 and bringing you even more great content.

1. Feature: Max Verstappen – why the kid is alright

Graham Keilloh reflected on Max Verstappen's difficult start to the 2018 season, but was certain it was a blip for the young Dutchman. He proved to be right as Verstappen's season quickly turned around and he outscored all but Lewis Hamilton in the latter stage of the season.

Motorsport Week's famous sliders made a return at the start of the year to give readers an easy way to compare 2018's cars against 2017's machinery. Ferrari's sliders proved most popular, racking up in excess of 150,000 views. You'll be seeing them again in the New Year!

3. Sebastian Vettel 'could eat Charles Leclerc alive' – Jacques Villeneuve

One of the most exciting things to watch next year is how well Charles Leclerc will do against four-time champion Sebastien Vettel in equal machinery. Some believe Leclerc could surprise, but Jacques Villeneuve questioned the early promotion.

4. Shorter F1 races, less practice amongst format changes being considered

Formula 1's format continues to be a point of discussion and Liberty Media confirmed it too is considering changes, including sprint races and cutting practice. Nothing has been confirmed and it's unlikely to happen until 2021 though.

5. Tech bite: Ferrari's mirrors to thank for tiny sidepod inlets

When Ferrari debuted its SF71-H, the most striking feature was that of its tiny sidepods compared to its predecessor. Well we took a look at how the Italian outfit achieved that and why the wing mirrors were key to shrinking the sidepod inlets.

6. Ross Brawn promises 'sensational' video-game inspired cars in future

2018 was a big year on track and off track. We got our first glimpse of Liberty Media's plans for the sport with Ross Brawn presenting a number of concept cars for 2021 and his promise that F1 will look "sensational" in the future.

7. McLaren's Lando Norris on Toro Rosso's radar as Brendon Hartley faces axe

This season saw one of the most memorable silly seasons in recent memory – and one that actually delivered. We were first to report that Lando Norris had been approached by Toro Rosso to replace Brendon Hartley, but were ultimately rebuffed by McLaren who later promoted the young Briton to a race seat for 2019.

8. Formula 1 races could start at 15:10 in 2018

It was hardly a seismic change, but the story that F1 was considering changing the start time of the races proved a popular one. The change officially went ahead a few weeks later and after a year of tuning in a little later, it doesn't seem to have caused too much of a fuss.

9. Daniel Ricciardo will have ‘hard time’ with Nico Hulkenberg

A massive news story (and our 15th most read story in 2018) was that of Renault confirming Daniel Ricciardo for 2019, but claims by Sergio Perez that Ricciardo could struggle against Nico Hulkenberg proved even more popular, placing ninth in our list.

10. Eric Boullier resigns as McLaren F1 Racing Director

McLaren saw several major management changes this year, but the biggest was of course Eric Boullier's resignation. The Frenchman assured himself his position was safe, but just days later came the announcement that he would leave the struggling outfit.
