Lewis Hamilton stormed to pole position for the sixth time at the British Grand Prix in a barnstorming last lap effort to snatch it away from title-rival Sebastian Vettel who will line-up alongside him.
As the minutes ticked down towards the end of Q3 it looked as if Vettel may have had the upper hand, Hamilton made his move in the final run even with a powerslide in the final corner to snatch a 76th career pole.
Vettel had to have his necked taped up after experiencing some pain in the third practice session but said he had no issues during qualifying speaking to Martin Brundle after the session.
Kimi Raikkonen also was narrowly close to getting onto the front row giving Mercedes a headache when it comes to deciding the race strategy, he missed out on pole by less than a tenth of a second.
Valtteri Bottas had been on the pace of team-mate Hamilton all weekend long but was unable to convert it into getting ahead of the Ferrari's for the race, lining up on the second-row.
Both Red Bulls will occupy the third row with no answer to the pace of Mercedes or Ferrari around the Silverstone circuit. Max Verstappen will start in fifth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in sixth respectively.
Haas continue their good run from the Austrian Grand Prix to take the fourth row on the grid with Kevin Magnussen out-qualifying his team-mate Romain Grosjean to take seventh place.
Charles Leclerc maintains his solid form in 2018 with yet another Q3 appearance to put his Sauber into ninth-place on the grid with Force India's Esteban Ocon in tenth behind him.
Getting into Q3 for the seventh time in nine races was just too much for Renault's Nico Hulkenberg as he could not reach the top-ten shootout, losing out to Esteban Ocon by less than 0.06 of a second.
Sergio Perez was also narrowly close in escaping the clutches of Q2 but will have to settle for 12th place behind his former Force India team-mate.
McLaren's Fernando Alonso managed to escape Q1 but the pace was not there in the MCL33 for the top-ten shootout and will start from 13th on the grid.
Pierre Gasly did well to pull his Toro-Rosso Honda into Q2 after little running in FP3 due to team-mate Brendon Harltey's heavy crash and will line up 14th.
Behind the Frenchman is the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson who is still finding it difficult to match the pace of his Monegasque team-mate Charles Leclerc who made it into Q3.
Spain's Carlos Sainz was unable to get a lap together in the other Renault and was the surprise exit from the first part of qualifying given the overall pace of the French-outfit in 2018 and will start the race from 16th.
Stoffel Vandoorne's pace against team-mate Fernando Alonso has been inconsistent this season and once again found himself out in Q1 in 17th place ahead of both Williams' who had a very scruffy session.
Russia's Sergey Sirotkin attempted his first hot lap and found the gravel trap at Stowe after a snap of oversteer left him sliding into the kitty-litter, he eventually made it out by himself after fortuitously landing his rear tyres on the escape road.
Lance Stroll had a similar moment at Brooklands but was not as lucky after bedding his FW41 solidly in the gravel causing a red flag to the session while marshals retrieved the stricken car. He also failed to set a time in the session.
Brendon Hartley did not take part in the session due to the suspension failure which led to his heavy crash at Brooklands in FP3.
