Daniel Abt has claimed provisional pole position for the Berlin E-Prix, beating NIO Formula E's Oliver Turvey to the top of the timesheets although the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler is under investigation.
Qualifying opened up with Abt setting the pace in the first group of runners, setting the early pace with a best lap time of a 1m 09.774s, edging out Oliver Turvey to provisional pole.
In initial qualifying, Abt's fastest lap remained unbeaten for a large portion of the session, with his Audi team-mate Lucas di Grassi edging him out in the final group of runners with a 1m 09.620s lap.
While di Grassi and Abt secured a place in the Super Pole shootout, the pair were accompanied by championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne, Turvey and Dragon Racing's Jerome d'Ambrosio who put in an impressive performance in the third group of runners to push his team-mate, Jose Maria Lopez, out of the top five.
As the slowest of the top five in the group qualifying stages, Turvey opened proceedings in Super Pole, claiming provisional pole position for NIO with a 1m 09.735s lap.
After d'Ambrosio failed to string a quick enough lap together, focus switched to home favourite Abt, with the German driver reclaiming the provisional top spot with a 1m 09.472s.
When Vergne failed to match his performances of recent races in qualifying in Berlin, it was guaranteed that an Audi car would start from pole, with reigning champion di Grassi being the final runner of the session as the fastest qualifier in the group stages.
An unconvincing first sector was followed by another slow sector two for di Grassi. Trying to make time up in the final sector of the Flughafen Tempelhof circuit, the Brazilian racer ultimately pushed his Audi-backed machine too hard, running wide in Turn 9 to end any chance that he had to take pole position and a further three points in Season Four.
While Abt emerged as the fastest driver of the session, his pole position still remains provisional after the driver failed to complete a warmup lap when performing his initial run in group one qualifying. Turvey was the German racer's nearest challenger, securing second on the grid, 0.263s shy of pole.
Vergne secured third in qualifying for Techeetah while d'Ambrosio qualified in fourth place for Dragon, looking to emulate his performances of Season One at Tempelhof when the driver inherited victory. Di Grassi completed the top five.
Outside of the Super Pole runners, Felix Rosenqvist secured sixth on the grid for Mahindra Racing while Sebastien Buemi lines up on the fourth row of the grid after qualifying in seventh for Renault e.dams.
Alex Lynn out-qualified Sam Bird in the DS Virgin camp, securing eighth on the grid while Bird completed the top 10, with Mitch Evans separating the pair in ninth for Jaguar Racing.
On his Formula E return, Tom Dillmann impressed for venturi to out-qualify his team-mate for the weekend, Maro Engel, with the Frenchman securing 12th on the grid for the Monegasque squad.
Nick Heidfeld had a disappointing result in front of his home fans, ending the session in 14th while Nelson Piquet Jr also struggled for Jaguar Racing, only managing 15th.
18th place on the grid for Andre Lotterer means that he will be unable to serve the 10-place grid penalty that he was handed for this weekend following an accident with Bird at the Paris E-Prix, meaning that he will have to serve a time penalty in the race.
Nico Prost was the slowest driver of the session in the second Renault, qualifying in 20th place as his disappointing season continues.
