Callum Ilott cruises to victory at Red Bull Ring

Callum Ilott cruised to victory during the opening race of the weekend in Austria, as Maximilian Gunther took a handful of points out of Lando Norris’ title advantage.

Ilott converted pole position into the lead off the line but was threatened by Joel Eriksson into Turn 3, the Motopark driver having leapt in front of Gunther through Turn 1.

Ilott, though, held firm, and from there gradually pulled away from Eriksson to register victory, his fifth of the campaign, by almost two seconds.

Gunther preserved third position in a relatively processional affair, which was enlivened by Norris’ pursuit of, and eventual move on, Honda protégé Tadasuke Makino.

Makino overhauled Norris on the opening lap but a lock up during the closing stages provided the Carlin driver with a chance, and the pair ran side-by-side for several turns.

Norris, who briefly ran on the grass during the scrap, eventually made a move stuck by holding the inside line into Turn 7, thus capturing fourth, meaning his title lead is now 70 points.

Makino nonetheless took a fine fifth, in front of Ferdinand Habsburg, Mick Schumacher and David Beckmann, while Guan Yu Zhou and Pedro Piquet rounded out the top 10.
