Will Power has pipped J.R. Hildebrand to pole position for the Iowa Corn 300, with the Penske racer rising to the top in dominant style towards the end of the session.
The Penske racer was the last driver to take to the Iowa Speedway during the all-important qualifying session, and eased to the top with a 185.210mph two-lap average.
Hildebrand, who masterfully managed to move on from his shunt in practice earlier in the day, was forced to settle for P2 for Ed Carpenter Racing.
Initially it looked as though Hildebrand was on course to secure his maiden pole position, after producing a very impressive 183.811mph two-lap average.
Helio Castroneves qualified an impressive P3 for Penske, with the Brazilian racer still hunting for his first victory since 2014.
Ed Carpenter was P4 for Ed Carpenter Racing, concluding a very productive session for the team owner with both cars inside the top four.
Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Takuma Sato was the fastest Honda-powered driver in P5 for Andretti Autosport, with the Japanese racer displaying his fondness for the short oval with a competitive qualifying performance.
Mikhail Aleshin and Tony Kanaan were sixth and seventh respectively, ahead of rookie Ed Jones who once again shone for Dale Coyne Racing.
The Dubai-born British racer momentarily sat on provisional pole position during the early stages of the session, before falling down the order as the track conditions improved.
James Hinchcliffe and reigning champion Simon Pagenaud rounded out the top ten, with the Frenchman in particular the first driver to take to the track at the start of the session.
Iowa expert Ryan Hunter-Reay was unable to trouble the sharp end of the order with Andretti Autosport, with the 2012 champion only managing P15.
Meanwhile championship leader Scott Dixon qualified way down in P17, with the Ganassi racer struggling somewhat with a 180.302mph average at the start of the session.
Carlos Munoz was the only driver unable to set a time, with the Columbian racer spinning at Turn 2 on his first lap and making very light contact with the barrier.
Although Munoz managed to safely return to the pits with only minor rear-wing damage, he was unable to return to the track and will therefore start the race from last position.
